Home Birth

Since the first homebirth on Christmas Day 2007, Belmont Midwifery Group Practice ("Belmont") has been offering families opportunities to birth in their own home with the caring support of a midwife.

Belmont is one of the few publicly funded, fully insured and hospital supported options for home birth in Australia. Belmont has an exemplary safety record with very low transfer rates for its home births.

birthing with family

Between 40 and 50 famlies (about 10% of all Belmont births) choose to be supported by Belmont midwives to birth at home each year.

Birthing at home is safe.
Hunter New England Health (HNEH) as well as the NSW Government supports the provision of pregnancy and homebirth care by qualified midwives. Belmont midwives work within NSW and HNEH guidelines to provide an environment for birth that is SAFE.

Who is it for?

Belmont supports homebirth for well and healthy women. Care for women is provided on an individualised basis. If you would like to consider a homebirth, or have any questions, please contact BMGP on 02 4923 2108.

Homebirth is available whether this is your first baby or if you've birthed before.

The guidelines suggest that women need to live within a 30 minute drive from John Hunter Hospital.

Benefits of Birthing at Home

  • Evidence is clear that choosing to birth at home significantly lowers the likelihood of intervention.
  • Empowering experience of being in your own space.
  • You don't have to go anywhere, your midwives will come to you.

Thanks to Belmont, the Hunter New England has the highest rate of homebirths in all of New South Wales, something we are exceptionally proud of!
